#afp is the usually the busiest channel on lspace IRC, and the closest in
atmosphere to the newsgroups.
Many of the regular posters on AFP, ABP and ATMD can be found here. Like the
newsgroups, it pays to lurk a while when you arrive here to get the feel of the
channel -- although you should say 'hello' when you come in.
You will usually find somebody on #afp at any time of the day or night as
there are regulars from all over the world -- plus many of the inhabitants don't
seem to need sleep at all.
Early in the UK morning there is a predominance of Scandinavians, who are
joined throughout the day by Kiwis, Aussies, the occasional 'Merkin and lots of
Brits. There is usually some chat going on, but during the UK day lulls occur
quite often -- people are ostensibly working after all.
The busiest time is from mid - late evening (again UK time). During this
period the in-jokes fly, autofilking may occur and comings and goings are
frequent (often accompanied by *hugs*, *smooches* and other tokens of affection
-- #afp is a friendly channel) It can be confusing for the newcomer, and most
confusing of all is the almost total absence of any discussion relating to Terry
Pratchett or his books, although fan activity is a common topic.
Virtual fines are imposed for Monty Python references and self-deprecation
amongst other things, so be prepared to have 20p demanded from you if you
habitually use phrases like 'Lovely plumage...'
#afp does not use pop-ups, sounds or colours and IRC-isms like 'kewl' and
'c u l8r' are strongly frowned upon.
The channel has two op-bots (cccb and cccb-se) and there is a list of
regulars who can gain ops if it becomes necessary, although this rarely
happens. Kicking is only carried out on extreme provocation and after warning.
You can find out who the ops are by typing /ctcp cccb (or cccb-se) oplist.
